[Project] Examining the Role of Theories in Information Behaviors Research (I) (II)

Project No.:NSC 93-2413-H-002-023;NSC 93-2413-H-002-008
Period:2004.7-2007.1

Project Introduction

The purpose of this research is to systematically identify the important theories in information behavior research, to assess their applications, and to evaluate the relationship between those theories. At the first stage, the study clarifies the major arguments in each theoretical model or framework, and their relationships. At second stage, the study explores the implications of the findings for developing taxonomy of the theoretical frameworks in user studies.

The research methods include literature analysis, thematic analysis and citation analysis. The potential contributions include: A deeper understanding of how theories in information behavior research have been developed; Identifying important theoretical frameworks and their applications for user studies; developing a taxonomy that reflects theoretical frameworks of information behavior research as a whole.

Abstract
The porpuse of this essay is to examine the research and development of digital library user studies. Based on the literature and scholarly communication, this article points out the three stages of American-based digital libraries development and the three approaches to studying those digital libraries. In conclusion, the author identifies five major research trends of DL user studies that need to be addressed in the future research and develpment.
